Alright, I can admit when I m wrong.  In my last post I talked about how I just couldn’t see getting into the NBA playoffs. They are too long and we know that it is going to be Cavs-Lakers in the final anyway, so why bother?  There seem now to be plenty of reasons:

Celtics Defending: The Celtics looked like they were down.  no Kevin Garnett, then Powe went down.  Scalabrine and Big Baby davis getting heavy minutes.   But they just will not quit.  The Big Three has been the Big one or two each game, it seems like Paul pierce and Ray Allen can’t have great games on the same day. Rajon Rondo has stepped up his game in ways that nobody could have imagined.  Big baby hiots game winners and then knocks over little kids!  The swagger they bring every night is awesome.  I thought the Bulls would get.  Thought they had no chance against Orlando, but they just keep kicking ass.

Those Baby Bulls: The Bulls look ready to go.  They lost an unfortunate series to the Celtics but they showed a lot out there.  Ben Gordon was unbelievable.  They lost, but they gained some toughness and experience.  I only see good things on the horizon for them.

The Cavs Having Fun: They are winning every game easily but they refuse to let up.  LeBron has truly become a superstar in the leaugue and he finally has the right players around him, but what I love most is how much fun they seem to be having on the court.  They are just so much fun to watch play!

Lakers v Rockets: Talk about heart.  The Rockets lost Tracey McGrady mid season, then lost Yao in game two.  Then they stepped up and blew out the Lakers before getting blown out themselves. This series is a roller coaster!  Game seven coming up and the winner (probably the Lakers) gets an amped up Denver team.

Where will amazing happen this year?

I’m just not sure if anybody is.  I know that I am not as much as I want to.  I just always find something else to do.  I know that this year is supposed to be the greatest year in a log time for the playoffs.  I know that this is the ascendancy of King James, but I also know that it is not going to be resolved for at least two months.  I mean I guess I’ll get back into it when we get a little closer to the finals.  I just really miss those 5 game series that used to start the playoffs.  Those were the best.

Oh well…

I saw a headline today that said “Former WWE wrestler found dead” and I wasn’t even surprised a bit. This time it was Andrew Martin, known to wrestling fans as “Test”. I guess that, given the circumstances of Chris Benoit’s tragic murder-suicide or Eddy Guerrero’s shocking death, this isn’t getting much play in the national media. But why shouldn’t it? We hear all the time about steroids in baseball, but can you imagine if a significant number of baseball players died every year from problems that related to their steroid use? That’s what is happening in the world of professional wrestling.

In what I plan to be a semi regular feature here at Big Sports, we look back at an athlete who had a moment of glory or infamy and try and find out where they are now.  I’m not going to be calling people or anything, this will all be Internet research.  First up, Frank Reich who led the Buffalo Bills to the greatest upset in NFL history.

It really could be Scott Bakula!

Frank Reich played college ball at the University of Maryland where he backed up good friend Boomer Esiason.   In what would be a preview of his career he came off the bench to rally Maryland back from a 31-0 deficit against a Bernie Kosar led Miami team at the Orange Bowl in 1984.  He led the Terrapins to a 42-9 second half.

He was drafted in the third round by the Buffalo Bills in 1985 where he would spend most of his time backing up Jim Kelly.   In 1992 the Bills had made the playoffs but Kelly was hurt.  They played the Oilers and were down 32 points heading into the half.  Reich led the team all the way back to 41-38 victory.  He also led the Bills to a 23-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers  before giving the reins back over to Kelly to get beat in yet another Super Bowl by the Cowboys.  In 1995 Reich was picked by Carolina  in the expansion draft.  While he threw the first touchdown pass in Carolina history he was replaced mid season by a young, fresh faced kid named Kerry Collins.  He also played for the Jets and the Lions (where he killed a comeback by spiking a ball on 4th down) and retired in 1998. Plus he looks just like Scott Bakula.  So where is Frank Reich now?

Mr. Reich was always a devout Christian and worked the motivational speaker circuit.  He also formed a memorabilia company called Pro Display, Inc. and had some retail ventures with Boomer Esiason.  But recently he was hired as the QB coach for the Indianapolis Colts (I always thought Peyton was the QB coach there).  But what really cracks me up is that Peyton is bgasically the Jim Kelly of this generation, albeit with one Super Bowl ring.  I don’t even mean that in a cruel way, but when you think about it they are pretty similiar in their ability to put up huge numbers but without the key wins that one would think they would have.  So there’s Frank Reich, hanging out with Jim Sorgi with in Indianoplis.

Well I guess that was just some flirtation for Warner with San Francisco.  That is no place for a religious man anyway, from what I hear.  So what does Warner going back to Zona mean?

I don’t think it means much other than that Matty Leinart is gonna stay on that bench for awhile.  There is no reason to believe that Arizona is going to duplicate what they did last year.  They still have huge holes at running back, Warner’s thumb problem could pop up at any time and both the coordinators are gone.  Don’t forget how the finished the season and how horrible that division was.  I can’t see the Cardinals winning more than 5 games next year, and Fitzgerald will win three of those by himself.

I hope Arizona enjoyed the year in the sun because it was the last for awhile…
